I have a friend who is one of the most courageous people I know. Not because he climbs mountains or jumps out of airplanes, but because he’s always ready to learn something new. He says what he sees and feels, honestly, but never harshly, and somehow always in the right way. There are very few things that stop him.
When we talk about confidence and courage, we often end up laughing and saying, “No one remembers a coward.” It’s become a kind of inside joke between us, but like most jokes that stick, there’s a little truth behind it.
Because when I look back, I realize that most of us don’t regret the things we did. We regret the things we didn’t do. The job we didn’t apply for. The person that we liked but never dared to approach. The dream we put aside because it felt too risky.
Take a Chance is a reminder of that, to dare the jump, even when we don’t know where we’ll land. To say yes even when fear says no. To live a little more bravely, because failure is rarely the worst thing that can happen. Most often, it’s just a lesson, and a story we’ll tell later with pride that at least we dared.
Sometimes when I feel insecure in my work or in life, I have a small mental trick. I think, “Okay, what if it all falls apart? What’s the worst that can happen?” And then I imagine myself moving out to the forest, living simply and quietly in solitude. And honestly,I think I’d be okay. Maybe I’d even write more music.
So yes, this song is about courage, but not the dramatic kind. It’s about everyday courage. The quiet kind that moves us forward, one decision at a time.
